Luculia gratissima

LIMITED TIME SALE PRICE!!

A delightfully FRAGRANT shrub from the Himalaya, and in the same family as Gardenia, one can expect the air to be heavily perfumed in September and October by Luculia. These evergreen shrubs are native to China, Nepal, India and Bhutan and were brought to Europe in the 19th century. However, because they are quite tender they will only thrive in mild climates. Even for us here on the California coast, we have to protect them from frost in the winter. The plant will grow quite large, up to 10 ft tall, but can be pruned to develop a bushier specimen (just after blooming). The species name gratissima means "very Pleasing", and is aptly named. When in bloom the lovely light pink flowers, larger than daphne flowers, have a heavenly fragrance and can perfume a whole yard! You may have to overwinter these shrubs in a greenhouse, but it will be so worth it.
