Golden-variegated Hakone grass, is native to wet, rocky cliffs in the mountains of Japan's main island. Loose, cascading mounds of bamboo-like grass is so variegated that very little green is left. In cool climates the plants are a cream-white color if grown in full sun. A cool weather grower, Japanese Forest Grass will grow better in the Pacific Northwest or in the cooler eastern US. If grown in warmer-drier climates, grow in more shade. It makes a striking color accent or a wonderful container plant.
